What do you want to create in your life?
What do you want to create in your life?

This is a great question if you're feeling stuck, stagnant or at the cross-roads of a big decision.

Do you want to adventure and wander? Do you want to have a lovely family and a job you enjoy going to every day? Should you take that new job or start that new business? Do you want to change the world? Should you move to a new city? What experience do you want to have of your life? And where the hell do you even start?!

Funny you should ask... There's an awesome three-step exercise I use with my clients to help them get clear on what they want for their personal and professional lives. All you need is a pen and paper.

Step 1: Free-writing. Write down, stream of consciousness style, everything you love and want to have in your life. List anything and everything that comes to mind - no matter how irrelevant or silly it may seem. This isn't a place to judge or censor yourself; be open and completely honest with yourself. Here's my list, exactly as it came out:

*A dream so big I have to grow and change to create it
*Joy, child-like delight, fun, excitement, playfulness
*Cheerful people and giggling until my abs hurt
*Emotional stability, contentment, peace, meditation, breath work
*Adventure, frequent travel, safaris, reefs, tropics, takeoff/landing, helicopters, riding on the back of a motorcycle through the jungle (SORRY MOM)
*Fitness, including yoga, strength conditioning, running, cycling
*A life of minimalist luxury (i.e. minimal "stuff" but beautiful locations/experiences)
*Someone bloody awesome to spend my life with and create memories together
*Mediterranean food, popcorn, pistachios, cherries, watermelon, avocados
*Outdoor activities: snowboarding, hiking, canoeing, canyoning, camping, exploring jungles
*Watching sunrises/sunsets from the beach with my toes in the sand
*Living half the year in a warm climate with blue water, crashing waves and sunshine
*Ripping down a dirt road with my head out the window and music blasting
*Walking alone in the woods with my dog, looking up into the canopy and listening
*Cuddling puppies and kissing babies
*Tickle fights (but only when I'm winning... I'm serious)
*The smell of unfinished leather, Christmas trees and rain on pavement after a heatwave
*Yachts, patios, secret gardens, massive spa tubs, silk pillows and white
*Recycling, hugging trees and picking flowers
*Cottages by the beach and sleek city apartments with massive windows
*Throwing patio BBQs, civilized dinner parties and playing dress up
*Red wine by the fireplace with a good book
*Majestic bouquets on a spotless quartz countertop
*Metalic and sparkles
*Valet parking and black leather
*Getting shit done
*Learning about myself and gradually creating new habits and patterns for how I live my life
*A good pair of faded jeans and an oversized T-shirt
*My family, friends and a chilled out chin wag
*Manicures/pedicures and spa days
*Real estate, interior decor, architecture, photography, pretty things, diamonds (can't help it...)
*Lazy Sunday mornings, cozy oversized PJs and movie marathons
*Giving ridiculous gifts that make people laugh and properly-thought-out Christmas stockings
*Challenge and mental stimulation
*Toned muscles and feeling strong
*A passionate, creative team in my business
*Consistent opportunity to meet and work with inspiring people making a difference in the world
*Supporting others to live a life of intention
*Making things - painting, writing, decorating, making costumes
*Working three days/week and taking 2 months/year off entirely to explore
*Having two home bases - my current in Canada and another elsewhere TBD
*Expressing love, gratitude and creativity

Step 2: Group the items into themes. Below, I've chosen lifestyle, personal and business.

*Emotional stability, contentment, peace, meditation, breath work
*Throwing civilized dinner parties, patio BBQs and playing dress up
*Red wine by the fireplace with a good book or sunset
*Walking alone in the woods with my dog
*A life of minimalist luxury (i.e. minimal "stuff" but beautiful locations/experiences)

*Cheerful people and giggling until my abs hurt
*My family and a chilled out chin wag at the kitchen table
*Manicures/pedicures and spa days
*Real estate, interior decor, architecture, photography, pretty things, diamonds (can't help it...)
*Valet parking and black leather
*Majestic bouquets on a spotless quartz countertop
*The smell of unfinished leather, Christmas trees and rain on pavement after a heatwave

*Consistent opportunity to meet and work with inspiring people making a difference in the world

*Learning about myself and gradually creating new habits and patterns for how I live my life

Step 3: Next, distill what you're willing to commit in each area of your life.

In my lifestyle, I'm committed to:
*Continuing to live a flexible life of consistent adventure
*Working less and playing more
*Staying active and eating healthy food I enjoy
*Looking out for my own wellbeing before I take care of others
*Spending my time in places that make me feel good and have lots of sun

In my personal and home life, I'm committed to:
*Creating a lasting, loving relationship based on trust and committment
*Making people around me laugh and feel appreciated
*Fostering connection and deep friendships
*Living a comfortable life full of gratitude

In my business, I'm committed to:
*Visioning bigger goals than currently seem possible and growing into them
